One of the most spiritually enriching pilgrimages, Kailash yatra is a rare and precious opportunity to behold the divine abode of Lord Shiva. All the Vedic scriptures describe Kailash as the eternal abode of Lord Shiva, who is an expansion of the Supreme Lord Krishna and among His greatest devotees. It lies near the source of some of Asia’s longest rivers. There is vivid description of Mount Kailasha in the Puranas about its glorious majesty, beauty and the divine realm where Lord Shiva with His consort Parvati are intensely aborbed in pure devotional service. The content of many Puranas or major sections contain voluminous conversations between Lord Shiva and Parvati, thus also indicating that ideal life of a householder should be focused on spiritual matters. One description in the Vishnu Purana of the mountain states that its four faces are made of crystal, ruby, gold, and lapis lazuli. It is a pillar of the world and is located at the heart of six mountain ranges symbolizing a lotus.

The Kailash Parikrama is 52 kms and takes about 3 days to perform. Lake Manasarovar lies at 4,556 m (14947 ft) above mean sea level, making it the highest freshwater lake in the world. It is relatively round in shape with the circumference of 88 kilometres . Its depth is 90 m (300 ft) and its surface area is 320 square kilometres. Manasa Sarovar lake has long been viewed by the pilgrims as the source of four of the greatest rivers of Asia namely Brahmaputra, Karnali,Indus and Sutlej. Lake Manasa Sarovar is regarded the ultimate personification of purity. According to the scriptures, the lake was first created in the mind of Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth. Hence, in Sanskrit it is called "Manas sarovara", which is a combination of the words manas (mind) and sarovara (lake). .
